I'm teaching my dog to do a sport like agility or search and rescue theres a problem how i get him interested?
Q. i've got a Portuguese Water and wish to teach him a sport but i can't get him interested in wanting to find a ball let alone fetch a ball or jump over a wall any activity would be good i just want to know how to get him interested.

A. First start out slow. The jumps should be low so the dog has a good experience. To start in search work, have someone hold your dog while you hide from him. Again start out with short tracks first. You might want to join a club or take a class so that you can learn to train consistently. Plus than you will have other knowledgeable people to help you.

A. This is an excellent question. In order to arrive at the best answer, you need to read up on the follow ing 1. what exactly are the requirements for the top level of agility performance? 2. read the breed standard for each breed you have identified and pay close attention to what the dog was bred to do and whether today's breeders continue to breed to that goal. 3. then go the Orthopedic Foundation of America website to learn how each of these breeds ranks for such areas as hip disorders, patellar disorders, blindness, heart disorders, as well as bleeding disorders. 4. Plot your information into a chart for each breed for purpose of the breed, breed standard requirements, health issues. 5. Then go to each breed club's national… [cont.]

Does your dog enjoy agility? Is it an expensive sport to do?
Q. I really want to get into agility (why I'm considering an Australian Shepherd) but I don't know a lot about it. I know that I would enjoy it, and of course an Aussie most likely will, but I would like to know other things. Like the cost of competing. If I got into it I think it would be fun to actually compete in the sport, but that would consist of traveling and what-not which sounds expensive including show fees. Is it? Or is it relatively cheap? And how hard is it to do? Any other information would be great! I really would like to know about everything in the world of agility and any input would be awesome. Thanks!

A. 1. My dog and I LOVE agility. Nah, that's not strong enough. We're addicted to agility. Getting my dog started in agility was the smartest thing I ever did as a dog owner. The only big regret I have in my life was that I didn't get into the sport when I was younger and more athletic (now I'm in my 50's). 2. Expensive? Well, I've got a couple of answers. --To go to trials on a "fun" basis, do some simple workouts in your backyard (assuming it's suitable space) and take an intro class--all of that over the course of a year will run you maybe $500 (for good, portable intro equipment, a 6-8 session intro class, and a couple of inexpensive trials) for a year. I see that as pretty inexpensive for a sport and getting started in it (buying [cont.]

But, How old do you have to be to enter a dog in agility or flyball?? If it helps any, I live in Panama City, Florida. Please let me know, I would really LOVE to enter my dog in dog sports. Ok.. But, I was really trying to ask how old I would have to be? But you said ANY age? Ok.

A. For NADAC agility they have to be at least 18 months old. I'm not sure about AKC or USDAA agility. I'm also not sure about flyball. Irregardless or age your dog should be well trained before entering it in any competition. Entering too soon can cause hard to fix bad habits to occur.

Is Golf the best mainstream sport for the future?
Q. Someday I will not be able to use my legs as well as I can now. Golf doesn't require that someone be a great runner. My relative who uses a leg brace (he can't run or jog at all) can still play Golf with my friends, family, and I unlike other mainstream sports that require some degree of agility with one's legs.

A. I would love it to be, but unfortunately it will never be mainstream, not enough action for the public to get involved with. And the game requires to much honesty and integrity, most people do not have that.

How does one get involved in dog Agility training?
Q. I'm interested in getting involved in this sport, because I'd love to have that kind of motivation to excerise and, more importantly, because I'd love to spend time with a dog in that activity. The problem is, I have no idea how to get started...and what kind of dog would be good for this activity. I need one that would enjoy this sport but that could be good with kids (I have a little girl) and is affectionate! Can you help?

A. You've got the right attitude about this: agility success is about being a team and looking forward to working with your dog. And first it's a pet before it's an agility dog. 1. Tons of things you'll need to be able to do before you ever tell your dog to take a jump or go up an A-frame. --good obedience performance, especially sit-stay, down-stay, heel and recall (since agility is done without collar and leash). --clicker savvy. It's the best way to train agility dogs. I don't know of a single top-notch agility trainer who doesn't use a clicker. --do tons of tricks work. Doing tricks builds a relationship with your dog. Your dog sees you as fun, you learn how your dog learns, and the tricks serve as agility competition warmups. 3.… [cont.]

Why is basketball the most popular sport? No other sport do I hear talked about on the ground anywhere near as?
Q. much as basketball. It's a flawed game because it's only exciting in the last two minutes. I know the agility of the players is on a very high level, but that gets old. Ultimately it's a scoring marathon where there's no balance between offense and defense. The last two minutes of a close game and overtime are tremendously exciting. But watching 46 minutes of an exchange of scoring before that is ridiculous. How can anyone watch a whole game of b-ball?
Asked by flabbergasted - Fri May 7 06:49:18 2010 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. basketball is great maybe not the regular season because people take games off but playoff basketball even march madness is exciting the whole time. unlike football baseball, and there is no stand still or no frequent breaks in between possession, like in football and baseball. its constant movement and takes a athlete to compete at the highest level where in baseball you see these people that probably never ran a mile in there life. truth is ill watch any sport long as its a competition but basketball by far is my favorite.

What sport has the best athletes or requires most athleticism?
Q. Great agility, speed, jumping, stamina, coordination, strength. No way its hockey-they are on skates. Besides I worked out with hockey players that went to the National Tourniment D1 and they were worse athletes than our D2 football players. Not even close. Do they have athletic freaks of nature? no. Quit with the hockey its pathetic. Skates and a stick-best athletes with an implement? Maybe lacrosse or baseball. Not hockey. Real Wrestling is way tough. How high can they jump and how fast are they? Not very I am guessing.

What sport should I do with my dog?
Q. My dog is a big (~100lbs), lazy, and tough to get motivated Leonberger(a german breed), but she loves to please people and is happiest when she has a job to do. I am wondering which canine sport would be good to do with her. Leonbergers are herding dogs. I was thinking along the lines of carting or canine freestyle... she is very calm and obedient, but too big and lazy for agility. So yeah, what would be a good sport to play with her?
