I'm teaching my dog to do a sport like agility or search and rescue theres a problem how i get him interested?
Q. i've got a Portuguese Water and wish to teach him a sport but i can't get him interested in wanting to find a ball let alone fetch a ball or jump over a wall any activity would be good i just want to know how to get him interested.

A. First start out slow. The jumps should be low so the dog has a good experience. To start in search work, have someone hold your dog while you hide from him. Again start out with short tracks first. You might want to join a club or take a class so that you can learn to train consistently. Plus than you will have other knowledgeable people to help you.

Do you like to watch agility and what is your favorite dog sport?
Q. Okay, I am sitting here eating fries and looking very toward to watching the AKC invitational agility competition. I just love these shows. My question is, do you like to watch agility? I can see some people find it boring to watch dogs jump over poles, but I love it! If you want, you can include other sports you like to watch(dock diving, eathdog, etc.$ Caddie- I agree. I can never find them on tv! (cept for tonight) Make my dogs fight- you are repulsive. That is not a sport, it is abuse.

A. I used to do agility with my dogs. 2 cockers and a yorkie. People used to laugh at my yorkie as he used to fly over the jumps that were about 4 times as high as he was. My one cocker was scared of heights so could never get him over the 'A' frame or walk way, he used to freeze but my other cocker loved it and when ever off his lead would go over them without being told. I also did flyball which was fun too.

how should we start agility training?
Q. i have a 19 week old cavalier king charles spaniel puppy named chelsea. I have often heard that cavaliers exel at agility. She is extremely fast and extremely smart. At 8 weeks old we set up a little course made of pillows that were set up as a small a-frame an a tunnel. we expected her to just go around it or not care but she did the course twice, really fast.we think she would like the sport of agility and want to know when we should start and how we should start. Many thanks, morgan.
Asked by Morgan - Sun Oct 25 11:58:25 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At the moment, the tunnel is fine but no A-frame. Firstly too young, secondly there is a "right way" to do equipment if you plan to compete later. If you train "stuff" wrong, it will be VERY hard to change the behavior later!!! For now, I recommend you start looking for a good agility trainer...for the future. You can go to www.cleanrun.com and look for "clubs and trainers". Nextly I recommend you find local agility trials and go and watch and watch so you know what it is you plan/hope to do later. For calendars of trials, go to each agility organization's website: www.akc.org www.usdaa.com www.k9cpe.com Call and talk to local trainers. They might set up a "private lesson" for you and show you what pre-agility training you can work… [cont.]

Does your dog enjoy agility? Is it an expensive sport to do?
Q. I really want to get into agility (why I'm considering an Australian Shepherd) but I don't know a lot about it. I know that I would enjoy it, and of course an Aussie most likely will, but I would like to know other things. Like the cost of competing. If I got into it I think it would be fun to actually compete in the sport, but that would consist of traveling and what-not which sounds expensive including show fees. Is it? Or is it relatively cheap? And how hard is it to do? Any other information would be great! I really would like to know about everything in the world of agility and any input would be awesome. Thanks!

A. 1. My dog and I LOVE agility. Nah, that's not strong enough. We're addicted to agility. Getting my dog started in agility was the smartest thing I ever did as a dog owner. The only big regret I have in my life was that I didn't get into the sport when I was younger and more athletic (now I'm in my 50's). 2. Expensive? Well, I've got a couple of answers. --To go to trials on a "fun" basis, do some simple workouts in your backyard (assuming it's suitable space) and take an intro class--all of that over the course of a year will run you maybe $500 (for good, portable intro equipment, a 6-8 session intro class, and a couple of inexpensive trials) for a year. I see that as pretty inexpensive for a sport and getting started in it (buying [cont.]

How does one get a dog to do the agility - type sports?
Q. I have 2 blue heelers that are really smart. They immediately catch on to all tricks / sports I teach them (ex. swimming, fetching, sitting, jumping thru hula hoop, etc.). However, I know there is an easier way to teach anything. I'd like to know the technique to some of the teachings. For instance, how do I teach one to weave in & out of the cones? Or how do I teach one to walk up a ramp or slope? I'm thankful for any & all suggestions.

A. The sport of agility has rules and regulations. If you think you want to do it, you first really need to know what "it" is. There are right ways and wrong ways. Like: in agility dogs do not weave in and out of cones, but "weave poles". And there is a set distance apart the poles must be. Agility is great fun! And herding dogs are great at agility. And I am sure your dogs could do well. Seriously though. Do research on what agility is. Try to attend some trials so you see what it is you are wanting to do, and what it is you want to train your dog to do! Then, search for a GOOD agility trainer in your area. www.cleanrun.com has links to what trials are where and when, agility trainers, agility organizations you can get rules

How do i get my dogs involved in agility training?
Q. I have two terriers that have so much energy! They really need some constructive exercise and i think they would do great with agility. I'm just wondering how people get involved to learn about this sport. My dogs are both very young and I have the time and money to spend. Let me know if you have any information. Oh i live in central florida if that helps at all. Thanks in advance. Bree
Asked by Bree - Thu Jun 12 14:58:44 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Agility is terrific. Here's my analogy (and it works well for terriers--I've got one)...think of a really smart kid who's bored in school and doesn't have anything to burn off energy. They get into mischief. But instead, give that bright kid a goal, challenge 'em, make them think, work them physically and mentally plus have rewards for success. Well, that is what agility does for you and your dog. You get a calmer, more focused, happier, healthier, and better behaved dog. You also become more of a team. And agility becomes a "job" for your dogs. 1. As others noted, your dogs need to be at least 1 year old (in some cases 15 months) before they can start doing obstacles or entered in trials. That's so the growth plates can close. … [cont.]

Is Golf the best mainstream sport for the future?
Q. Someday I will not be able to use my legs as well as I can now. Golf doesn't require that someone be a great runner. My relative who uses a leg brace (he can't run or jog at all) can still play Golf with my friends, family, and I unlike other mainstream sports that require some degree of agility with one's legs.

A. I would love it to be, but unfortunately it will never be mainstream, not enough action for the public to get involved with. And the game requires to much honesty and integrity, most people do not have that.

Dog agility training? Is this something I can train on my own, or do I have to go somewhere??

I don't want to rack up hundreds in training costs in a pay by the hour environment. I would like to learn the techniques myself so I can do most of the training. A. I have been doing agility with my lab for almost 3 years now. I have taken classes both in Texas and Massachusetts so I can't speak for your area but it is pretty reasonably priced for dog training. Most beginner classes will be in the range of $125-175 for 6 to 8 weeks of lessons. I now pay $15 per class. So about 60 bucks a month and that's it. Like some other answerers stated the equipment is what prevents most people from training at home. It is costly to buy and hard to build so the cost of lessons basically is the same as making your own equipment! Agility is a blast for people and for dogs, and going to class and meeting other people with their dogs is very fun and supportive environment. I started out thinking I would… [cont.]

A. You've got the right attitude about this: agility success is about being a team and looking forward to working with your dog. And first it's a pet before it's an agility dog. 1. Tons of things you'll need to be able to do before you ever tell your dog to take a jump or go up an A-frame. --good obedience performance, especially sit-stay, down-stay, heel and recall (since agility is done without collar and leash). --clicker savvy. It's the best way to train agility dogs. I don't know of a single top-notch agility trainer who doesn't use a clicker. --do tons of tricks work. Doing tricks builds a relationship with your dog. Your dog sees you as fun, you learn how your dog learns, and the tricks serve as agility competition warmups. 3.… [cont.]

A. 1. Magazine: Clean Run. Go to their website (www.cleanrun.com) and also join their listserv (it's free). Best resource on the planet for agility info. 2. Cheap equipment. Well, competition-grade equipment is unbelievably expensive. --Affordable Agility has a great set of practice equipment called "Agility in a Bag." For $150 you get a cheap chute, a tire, 2 jumps and 6 PVC weaves. --You can make your own equipment. Jim Hutchins as THE book on doing this, it's called "Do it yourself agility equipment." Blueprints, lists of equipment, measurements, step-by-step, it's perfect (I used it to make my A-frame). --For $50 you can buy enough PVC and a PVC cutter (makes all the difference) to produce 12 PVC weaves and 2-4 PVC jumps. 3. … [cont.]

What sport has the best athletes or requires most athleticism?
Q. Great agility, speed, jumping, stamina, coordination, strength. No way its hockey-they are on skates. Besides I worked out with hockey players that went to the National Tourniment D1 and they were worse athletes than our D2 football players. Not even close. Do they have athletic freaks of nature? no. Quit with the hockey its pathetic. Skates and a stick-best athletes with an implement? Maybe lacrosse or baseball. Not hockey. Real Wrestling is way tough. How high can they jump and how fast are they? Not very I am guessing.

A. That would depend on the dog, and her condition, and on the sport. Obviously you can go back to training in Rally-O Novice a lot sooner than Agility Excellent. EDIT: In the case of Bassets, it also depends on how long it takes for her boobs to tighten back up, especially if she's jumping.
